Whose Side Is God On?

What in the passages below does God represent, other than a reason for not opening oneself to the experiences and thoughts of the "other"?

"[T]here is no God in all the earth, but in Israel..."

-- Old Testament (2 Kings 5:15)

"The wrath of God is like great waters that are dammed for the present; they increase more and more, and rise higher and higher, till an outlet is given; and the longer the stream is stopped, the more rapid and mighty is its course, when once it is let loose."

-- Jonathan Edwards, "Sinners In The Hands Of An Angry God"

"Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity, tradition has always declared that 'homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered.' They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved."

-- Catechism of the Catholic Church (2357)

"I certify to you that, with the help of God, we shall powerfully enter into your country and shall make war against you in all ways and manners that we can, and shall subject you to the yoke and obedience of the Church and of Their Highnesses. We shall take you and your wives and children, and shall make slaves of them, and as such shall sell and dispose of them..."

-- Christopher Columbus To Native Americans, 1492

"Take up the White Man's burden
Ye dare not stoop to less --
Nor call too loud on Freedom
To cloak your weariness.
By all ye will or whisper,
By all ye leave or do,
The silent sullen peoples
Shall weigh your God and you."

-- From Rudyard Kipling's "White Man's Burden"

"[Slavery] was established by decree of Almighty God...it is sanctioned in the Bible, in both Testaments, from Genesis to Revelation...it has existed in all ages, has been found among the people of the highest civilization, and in nations of the highest proficiency in the arts."

-- Jefferson Davis, Inaugural Address As Confederacy President

"Sensible and responsible women do not want to vote. The relative positions to be assumed by man and woman in the working out of our civilization were assigned long ago by a higher intelligence
than ours."

-- President Grover Cleveland, From a speech in 1905

"Hence today I believe that I am acting in accordance with the will of the Almighty Creator: by defending myself against the Jew, I am fighting for the work of the Lord."

-- Adolph Hitler, Mein Kampf

"The people in the land of Palestine were very wicked. They were given over to idolatry; they sacrificed their children; they had all kinds of abominable sex practices; they were having sex, apparently, with animals; they were having sex men with men, and women with women; they were committing adultery, fornication; they were worshipping idols, offering their children up; and they were
forsaking God.

"God told the Israelites to kill them all — men, women and children, to destroy them..."

-- Pat Robertson, Television broadcast, 5/6/85

"Our founding fathers began this nation with a great reverence for God...We are a strong country and will remain strong as long as we call on God to rescue us. Without Him we are doomed."

-- From America The Beautiful Web Site

"It is against my religion to impose religion on people...But I also believe that I need to invite God's presence into whatever I'm doing, including the world of politics."

-- U.S. Atty. Gen John Ashcroft, Lessons From A Father To His Son
